Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has opened up about the Sharks' disappointing start to the season, offering a frank assessment that's sure to spark debate among rugby enthusiasts.
Kolisi, a veteran of the game and a true leader, expressed his disappointment with the team's current standing, stating that the Sharks' talent-laden squad should be performing much better.
"With the caliber of players we have, we shouldn't be languishing in 14th place on the Vodacom URC log. It's a tough pill to swallow, but we need to step up our game across the board," he emphasized.
But here's where it gets controversial... Kolisi believes that while coaching plays a vital role, it's ultimately the players who must take responsibility for their performance. "You can point fingers at coaches, but at the end of the day, it's up to us as players to deliver. Coaches can only do so much," he added.
And this is the part most people miss... Kolisi isn't afraid to hold himself accountable. He acknowledged that his own performance hasn't met the high standards he sets for himself, and he's determined to lead by example.
"I put myself first in this critique. I haven't been at my best lately, and I need to step up. We, as a group of Springboks, should be setting a higher standard. It's embarrassing to fall short of our potential," he said.
The Sharks now face a crucial stretch of games, including clashes against European heavyweights Saracens and the Bulls, followed by a tough derby against the Lions. Kolisi knows the team needs to bring their A-game to turn things around.
"We have to show the world who we truly are. We're Springboks, and we must play like it. I'm taking some time off to recharge, but I'll be back with renewed energy and a clear focus on helping the team find its winning formula," he vowed.
