Unveiling HOPE: A Collaboration That Inspires
In an exciting partnership, renowned graphic artist Anthony Burrill joins forces with the National Print Museum for Irish Design Week, commencing an inspiring journey.
Burrill's visit to the museum sparked a creative collaboration with fellow artist Mary Plunkett. Together, they crafted a unique letterpress composition, utilizing the museum's impressive collection of large wooden type.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Burrill and the museum's printers, Freddie Snowe and John King, took it a step further. They worked on the historic Wharfedale Stop Cylinder Press, the very press that printed the iconic 1916 Proclamation. The result? A captivating artwork titled 'HOPE', set to be exhibited and offered for sale.
Carla Marrinan Funder, the museum's CEO, seized the opportunity to invite Burrill, stating, "Collaborations with creatives bring a fresh lens to our historic collection, showcasing its ability to resonate deeply with people today."
And this is the part most people miss: the museum has a history of successful collaborations, including projects with Irish artist Maser, writer Roddy Doyle, and musician Imelda May. It's a testament to the museum's vision of keeping printing alive and impactful.
The HOPE print is a direct response to the museum's extensive wooden letter type collection. During her research, Ms. Plunkett discovered an 80-line type, hidden away in the museum's depths.
Burrill shares, "I instinctively chose the letters H, O, P, and E. They fit together seamlessly, almost as if the design created itself. It was a beautiful moment of serendipity. The letters lock together, their serifs almost touching, creating a harmonious yet abstract layout."
In a world facing challenges, Burrill believes, "We need reminders of hope's positive power. This print aims to capture that enduring spirit."
Ms. Plunkett adds, "Seeing a new print come off the press is always thrilling, but the 80-line type on the Wharfedale was extraordinary!"
To celebrate, Burrill will return to the museum during Irish Design Week for a Q&A session, followed by live printing demonstrations and refreshments. A must-attend event for design enthusiasts!
