Cazenovia College, founded as a seminary in 1824, closed at the end of June after facing financial challenges. When tiny Cazenovia College announced it was shutting its doors for good in late June, it became just the latest example of the mounting economic crisis facing countless private institutions in the US today.

While the $25 million bond payment the college missed prompted the frantic fight for survival, it was not alone what brought the college down. Instead, Caz's troubles stem from falling student enrollments. A few years ago, it had more than 1,000 students. By 2019, that had fallen to 865.

In 2022, the median undergraduate tuition at Cazenovia College is $36,026, which is $7,696 more than the national average for Baccalaureate Colleges ($28,330). After taking grants and loans into account, the average net price for students is $17,238.

It was sponsored by the Methodist Church but was a non-sectarian institution.

Cazenovia is ranked #1,867 out of 2,217 schools in the nation for overall quality on College Factual's 2024 Best Colleges list.

In 1982 the trustees voted to return to coeducation, aiming for one-third male enrollment. The College's name was shortened. By 1983 there were men back on campus. In November 1988, the New York State Board of Regents awarded Cazenovia College the right to offer baccalaureate degrees.

Only 21 private colleges reported annual tuition and fees under $20,000. Kenyon College in Ohio, which reported tuition and fees for the 2023-2024 school year of $69,330, was the most expensive school. Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania was second, with reported tuition and fees of $68,380.

The entire campus was subsequently sold in an auction and purchased by New York Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund.

There were approximately 430 students when the college closed. The campus was offered for sale and then at auction. In 2020 entrepreneur Raj Bhakta purchased the former Green Mountain campus for $4.5 million. In 2024, Bhakta revealed plans to use the college buildings as hotel and condominium space.

Financial instability is the primary cause of college closures, according to a 2022 report by the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association and the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Typically, schools that close are small, for-profit private institutions.

Closures continue to hit college campuses, as many were unable to rebound from enrollment declines stemming from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
