49ers Trade Rumors: Top Target Trey Hendrickson Off the Market (2025)

The San Francisco 49ers' quest for a game-changing pass rusher just hit a snag. With a strong 4-2 record, they're leading the NFC West, but the recent loss of key players, Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, has cast a shadow over their promising season.

The absence of these defensive stars has understandably dampened the initial excitement, leaving fans and analysts wondering about the team's true potential. Will the 49ers make a bold move at the trade deadline, or will they play it safe and hold onto their draft picks for the future?

Reports suggest the team is actively seeking help in the edge rusher position, a move that makes perfect sense considering their struggles to generate pressure without Bosa. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler highlighted potential trade targets, including Trey Hendrickson from Cincinnati, Rashan Gary from Green Bay, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb from Miami, Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald IV from New York, and Arden Key from Tennessee.

But here's where it gets controversial... the top target, Trey Hendrickson, seems to be off the market. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the 49ers showed significant interest in the Bengals' All-Pro pass rusher. However, after Cincinnati's recent victory, it's unlikely they'll let him go.

This interest in Hendrickson signals the 49ers' willingness to make a significant move. While he may be out of reach, other pass rushers remain viable options, including some familiar faces for the team or defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Looking at the list, the 49ers have a clear connection with the Miami Dolphins, who are reportedly open to trade calls for Phillips and Chubb. Given Miami's current position, a trade before the deadline seems plausible.

Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald were drafted under the previous regime and have experience playing under Saleh. Johnson has been more effective when healthy, and the 49ers could explore a trade with the struggling 0-6 Jets.

Then there's Arden Key, whom former 49ers executive and Titans general manager Ran Carthon suggested as a potential trade target earlier this week. Key could be the most affordable option and offers versatile skills.

According to Russini, other teams are also seeking pass-rushing or defensive line help. The Philadelphia Eagles are one, especially after Zadarius Smith's retirement, although they may prioritize cornerback needs. The Kansas City Chiefs are also looking for defensive linemen and have shown a willingness to be aggressive. The Detroit Lions are in the mix as well, potentially seeking to pair a quality player with star Aidan Hutchinson.

Additionally, the Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Dallas Cowboys are also in the market for defensive help.

So, the 49ers face competition in their pursuit of a pass rusher. But it's clear they are actively exploring the market, hoping to find a valuable upgrade.
